About FUT Hair Transplants
Hair loss is a common issue that arises in both men and women of all ages. A FUT, or follicle unit transplant, can address balding and hair loss. FUT is a procedure that removes a thin strip of hair from the back and/or sides of the scalp where hair growth is permanent and not subject to balding. This strip is then dissected into hundreds to thousands of individual follicular unit grafts using microscopic dissection. These individual grafts, which typically contain between one to four hairs, are then transplanted into tiny sites created by Dr. Sabharwal in areas where hair is desired. FUT does offer great outcomes, including thicker, natural-looking hair in areas where hair loss once existed. Thin linear scarring on the back of the head, however, does occur with this procedure and is something to consider when weighing the options for hair restoration.
Our board-certified urologist, Dr. Sarat Sabharwal, at Beautiful Orlando Spa and Cosmetic Surgery in Orlando, FL will discuss FUT and also educate you on FUE, which is a newer method that uses robotic, automatic technology to produce similar results using a different technique.
FUT is recommended for both men and women with advanced hair loss who are looking for a long-lasting solution to restore their hair. At the same time, they should have adequate donor hair to cover current and future areas of loss. Those who wear their hair very short (less than 1/2 an inch) may not be suitable for this procedure because of the linear scar that is left on the back of the scalp. If you wear your hair short, you may be a better candidate for FUE using the advanced ARTAS technique. This will help reduce the chances of scarring.

PRP Hair Restoration
PRP hair restoration is an effective alternative to hair transplant surgery if patients are looking for a less invasive option. Platelet-rich plasma is extracted from the patient's body and then separated out into a centrifuge machine before being injected into the balding areas of the scalp. A local anesthetic will be applied to the treated areas to help make the procedure as comfortable as possible. The PRP encourages collagen production and the body's natural healing process, promoting the damaged hair follicles to regenerate and growth to be restored. Procedures typically last 60 – 90 minutes. Once the procedure is complete, patients can resume to their normal activities, as the treatment is noninvasive.
What to expect
All hair transplant surgeries are performed in an accredited surgical facility. The entire procedure can take up to 3 – 5 hours to complete and general anesthesia may be used. Recovery is dependent upon each individual and the extent of their surgery, although the average patient can return to work within a few days. Exercise and strenuous activity should be avoided for 3 – 4 weeks. Around six weeks post-op, an initial hair loss of the new grafts will occur. This is common and allows new, healthy hairs to grow.
Plan Your Procedure
Restore your hairline
FUT can be a very effective method for addressing balding and thinning hair in both men and women. However, less invasive procedures like PRP restoration are available as well, depending on your needs. The decision on which extraction method to use should be individually weighed out in consultation with Sarat Sabharwal, M.D. There are many factors needed to be taken into consideration before making a decision, and Beautiful Orlando would love the opportunity to walk you through the consultation process.
