Have you been thinking about getting lip fillers, but just don’t know where to start?! You’ve come to the right place because we'll be discussing all about lip filler preparation, post-procedure recommendations, and general tips and tricks to help you along the way. The more you know, the better your results will be and in no time, you will be ready to show off your new luscious lips!

1. YOU MUST PREPARE THOUGHTFULLY

You are making a change to your physical appearance when you get lip filler. Whether you are a first-timer and do not know what to expect, or you are a veteran when it comes to injections you must be mindful you will leave looking different than when you walked in.

The idea of getting lip filler is to enhance the beautiful lips you already have; however, it is still a change. Your result does not have to be a dramatic one, but nonetheless you will notice a difference and that is something to be aware of.

2. YOU ALSO MUST PREPARE PHYSICALLY

Remember, getting lip filler is considered a medical procedure. Thus, you must consider some of the items in place that help ensure your safety and healing process post-injection.

If you have a history of Herpes Simplex (cold sores or fever blisters), you will need to inform your provider to receive advice on antiviral therapy prior to your treatment. Injectable fillers can trigger a non-active outbreak, which can lead to more serious complications.

Also, remember to please reschedule your appointment if you develop a cold/flu, cold sore, rash, blemish in the area to be injected etc. Once resolved, you can safely schedule your dermal filler appointment.

3. IT’S IMPORTANT TO SCHEDULE YOUR APPOINTMENT AROUND YOUR LIFESTYLE

Results from lip filler injections will take approximately 14 days to heal and settle into your tissues. It is imperative you schedule your filler appointment at least 2 weeks prior to any special event you may be attending, such as a wedding or a vacation. This way you can ensure that the healing process is complete, and you have the lips you love prior to the occasion!

4. THERE IS A VARIETY OF FILLER THAT CAN ACHIEVE A VARIETY OF GOALS

Gone are the days where there was one filler that fit all! In its place are a variety of dermal fillers that can be used to meet your individual needs.

5. FILLER DOES NOT LAST FOREVER

Unfortunately, as some would say, filler does not last forever. The duration is influenced by many lifestyle factors such as metabolism, level of activity, intake of certain dietary items etc. Regardless of the filler chosen, most lip fillers last 4-12 months.

6. BRUISING DEPENDS ON THE PERSON

One of the most common questions we get from patients before receiving filler is, “Will I bruise?” Our answer is always, “it depends,” because it just does. Every person’s body and anatomy are so different; thus, it is unpredictable to determine if you will bruise, or the severity it. Fortunately, there are interventions in place to decrease the likelihood such as:

Discontinue the use of Aspirin or other non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (i.e., Ibuprofen, Advil, Motrin, Aleve, Celebrex, Fish Oil, Gingko Biloba, St. John’s Wort and high doses of Vitamin E- unless medically unnecessary) one week prior to your appointment to reduce the risk of bruising and bleeding.

If you are using prescription blood thinners, or Aspirin, please notify your practitioner. You may need to check with your prescribing doctor prior to stopping these medications.

7. YOU ARE UNIQUELY YOU

Many patients come into their lip filler appointment with an “inspiration” photo showcasing a set of lips they would like to achieve. You can show your provider what you want, but if your lip type/shape cannot physically achieve it, you could possibly leave disappointed. Everyone’s anatomy and facial proportions are different. Although you may desire to have a certain set of lips you have seen on Instagram, for example, your unique anatomy and facial proportions may not make that achievable. You are much better off telling your provider what you love about your lips, what want to enhance, or what you want to change. Then, with your goals in mind, your provider can decipher the best plan of action given their professional recommendations based on your unique self.

8. THE LIP SWELLING JOURNEY POST-INJECTABLE CAN BE A VISUAL DISTORTION

Swelling occurs immediately and generally resolves within 48 hours post-injection. So, when you are thinking, “What have I done! My lips are huge!” remember this is only temporary. Swelling decreases by approximately thirty-percent, which means what you see immediately after injection is not how large your lips will be once they are healed.

9. LIP FILLER IS NOT PERMANENT

Here at Beautiful Orlando Medical Spa we only use hyaluronic acid (HA) fillers. This means lip filler can be reversed with a reversal agent, hyaluronidase (also called Hylenex). So, in the rare event that it is medically necessary to remove the filler, or if you absolutely do not love your results, HA fillers can be dissolved if you prefer not to wait for it to metabolize on its own. It is not a permanent commitment.

10. SLOW AND STEADY WINS THE RACE

One syringe distributed appropriately throughout the body of the lips is generally the right amount of filler for most people to start with. I know what you are thinking, “one whole syringe?!” Yes, one whole syringe. One syringe of lip filler is equivalent to 1.0 mL or cc. In simpler terms, 1.0 mL is one-fifth of a teaspoon—not much at all!

Two syringes tend to be a lot of volume for most people to receive in one setting, especially if you are seeking a natural, subtle appearance. We recommend that our patients let their first syringe settle, and reevaluate four weeks later, to see if an additional syringe is desired.  Gradually layering lip filler is the safest, most natural approach to achieve the results that you desire.

With all this being said, if you’ve been considering lip filler, but still have some questions we always encourage scheduling a complimentary consultation. Our experienced physician is here to answer all your questions, address your concerns and put your mind at ease around the world of injectables. Call (407)766-6080 to make an appointment!
